Helpful advice / Restoration

1 - Aline Grenon’s Residence, Montreal

When Mrs. Grenon asked me to intervene for the finishing, her house façade masonry works were already finished. One of her friends, an architect, recommended me to her.

Mandate : Restore the house details and original look.

Study of the file : Inspection of the quarter and study of the houses having an original ornamentation in a more or less fresh state. Choice of elements and sizes to be respected.

Proposition : A sketch of the façade incorporating all the chosen elements was presented to Mrs. Grenon. After some discussions and a few modifications, the project was approved. .

Realisation : A roofing contractor started the works.

Mr. and Mrs. ----------- had already finished the external cladding works after having opened up the walls and improved the insulation R factor. The windows outlines were covered with aluminium which filling joints gave way and let the water penetrate inside the walls.

Mandate : Give the house its original style and correct the windows.

Study of the file : Mrs. -------- gave me the original blueprints dated of 1884 which were bought at Sears Roebuck at the time. Then, I compared my project pictures with the plans and realised that the house has not been built accurately according to the plans.

Proposition : After having made an interpretation of the spirit and the design that the architect of Knoxville - Tennessee, meant to give this Victorian house, I was able to propose to the owner a sketch showing the works to be done respecting and correcting the original construction, including the outlines of problem windows!

Realisation : The works have been realized in the middle of July by a craftsman I introduced to Mrs.________. The metal cornice has not been changed as the replacement costs were considered too expensive.
